Why Take Piano
Lessons

Why Take Piano Lessons K-12?

This list of reasons was compiled by students in one of the group lessons: Robert A., Cheryl B., Carolyn D., Erin F., Tara M., Angela P., and Amy R.

  • It is fun.
  • It looks good on college applications because colleges want students who are well-rounded. (Medical schools readily accept musician major applicants because of their discipline level and dexterity level.)
  • It helps with geography in school because you can associate composers with countries and it also helps in other school studies. (Listening to Mozart has been proven to temporarily raise a student’s I.Q.)
  • The piano is a favorite keyboard instrument of many people and a source of enjoyment.
  • It is an accomplishment to learn to play the piano.
  • Music is something that all ages and all nationalities enjoy.
  • Piano study is an opportunity to develop talent and gain skills. (The more knowledge and skills a person develops, the more that person can enrich not only his life, but the lives of others.)
  • Piano study develops hand and eye coordination.
  • It is therapeutic. It relieves stress and anger and promotes relaxation.
  • It helps you to express your feelings.
  • It builds confidence and helps you overcome stage fright.
  • Be the “Life of the Party” at social events.
  • It helps develop concentration, discipline, and patience.

Why Take Piano Lessons as an Adult?

  • Piano lessons provide emotional release in a stress filled world.
  • Research is conclusive: Piano lessons help keep the mind sharp and active to combat both physical and mental aging.
  • Playing by ear limits you to playing only what you have heard. Learn how to sight- read so that your repertoire expands.
  • You can never have too many friends. Piano lessons provide social connections through group activities and parties.
  • It is joyful to share your piano skills with your family, to play in ensemble with your friends, and to share your music at senior citizen facilities and hospitals.
  • Adults who take piano lessons grow musically and provide a role model for their children and grandchildren
  • Learn music theory and harmony so you can compose your own music. When those glorious sparks of creativity flash through your mind, you will know how to notate them. Some of my adult students write special pieces for their grandchildren.
  • Increase your knowledge of music history.
  • Learn at your own rate of speed.
  • Enjoy playing popular, jazz, and the classics.
  • Let your piano be an instrument of beautiful sounds and not a piece of furniture that collects dust.
  • Fill your home and your life with music and fun.
